Rourke has plenty to do in his apartment, but when Zachri steps off the elevator he’s right there to greet him, taking his laptop case and leaning in for a kiss. This is a ritual he’s always envied from the sitcoms his mom likes to watch, and he loves enacting it in real life.

“Hello, handsome.”

Zachri pouts. Since he went back to teach, Rourke got him a pair of fashion-serving glasses to wear. They look smart and sexy, Rourke said when Zachri didn’t want to wear them. But truthfully, Rourke thinks of them as a subtle mark of his claim. Pre-Rourke he didn’t wear glasses. Now he has them, and every pretty, ripped alpha student in his class is going to know why.

“Did you keep these on all day?” He’s not the least bit subtle about their purpose. Zachri is bound to him and obligated to follow through.

“Yes, but it’s annoying to stare through glass. Sometimes I have to take them off and clean them with my shirt.”

Rourke likes to imagine a librarian-looking Zachri doing all sorts of things in the classroom.

“Show me,” he says playfully, handing them back.

Zachri gives him the look, Does this amuse you? But proceeds to clear the lenses with his shirt and put them on. For a reward, Rourke puts his arms around his neck and kisses him deeply.

His rounded stomach pushes into the alpha’s toned one. And when he rests back on his heels, Zachri’s hand touches the baby, caressing.

Not long ago, Rourke would get creeped out just looking at a pregnant man. He’s still a little weirded out when he looks in the mirror, imagining how bad it’s going to get. But he takes classes with other pregnant guys. They’re all the same here. And when Zachri looks at him like that, it’s impossible to feel bad about himself.

“I have great news,” Zachri says, removing the glasses again.

“Oh?”

“Your mother called. She misses you and wants to come visit. Possibly, it will be permanent, but she’ll decide when she gets here.”

Rourke steps back. That’s not great news at all.

“When did she call you? This afternoon?”

“Yes. She said she realizes that she’s missing too much. She’s going to an evaluation tomorrow, to make sure she’s capable of space flight, but most likely she is, so…” He smiles to share his big news, and it looks quite natural on him. It only shows up a moment too late, like it comes with the afterthought, Oh, I should be smiling. “She’ll be here in two weeks!”

“Uhh…”

“It’s great, isn’t it? Everything you’ve wanted. I think it’s time you two were reunited. She’s a wise woman sometimes, despite… not… seeming that way all the time,” he says delicately.

“Goddamn it, she went behind my back!”

“What?”

“She wanted me to send a picture and I wouldn’t do it, so now she’s coming here.”

Zachri looks confused. “This is over a picture? She sounded heartfelt. She said she missed you.” He grabs Rourke. “How cruel is she?”

“No, no.” Rourke pets his biceps to soothe him. His sleeves aren’t nearly as airy and unfilled as the creases would make it seem.
